The Bible begins with the account of how God created man, man enjoyed fellowship with God and then man lost that fellowship through sin. The Bible concludes with sin being eradicated and man’s fellowship with God fully restored. The Bible, a volume comprised of sixty-six individual books written over the span of some 1500 years by forty different writers, is telling one complete story. It is the gospel story because it tells the good news of how what was lost can be found through Jesus Christ.
However, while the focus of the story is the salvation of man, the main character(s) is not man, but God. It was God who declared “let us make man in our image” at the beginning (Genesis 1.26) and it was God who determined “before the foundation of the world” that we would be redeemed by “the precious blood of Christ” (1Peter 1.19-20). Every good story has a hero, and the hero of the gospel story is God.
The aim of this work is to trace the narrative of the gospel story throughout the pages of Scripture. Rather than being an overview of all sixty-six books, this work will hone in on specific verses and events. Each lesson will focus on a particular verse or event, while giving the overall historical context. No doubt, many important verses and events will not receive the attention they deserve, but the purpose is not to cover ALL Scripture. The aim is two-fold: first to show the through-line of the gospel story throughout Scripture and second to unfold how the story transforms us.
Let’s take a closer look at the greatest story every told…
